The Global Ocean Treaty has become law after 79 nations ratified the landmark agreement. The treaty provides a legal framework to protect international waters, where currently only 1% is protected.
"This is the most significant victory for ocean protection and restoration I have ever witnessed," said Greenpeace's Ariana Densham. The treaty could establish the largest network of ocean sanctuaries in history.

Governments now have the tools to create marine protected areas in waters beyond national boundaries, offering hope for marine ecosystems and the billions of people who rely on them.
