In Montana’s Flathead Valley, a group of volunteers has found a gently persuasive way to encourage safe choices. Calling themselves the Montana Barfairies, they seek out cars that have been left parked overnight outside bars — a telltale sign that the owner opted for a cab or a designated driver rather than getting behind the wheel after drinking — and leave a small surprise: a $5 coffee gift card, as a thank-you for choosing safety.
The idea is disarmingly simple, but it carries a serious purpose. Rather than lecturing or shaming, the Barfairies reward the responsible decision, hoping to reinforce a habit that saves lives. The nonprofit also advocates for stronger DUI laws and offers support to families who have lost loved ones to drunk driving, giving the lighthearted gesture a foundation of genuine advocacy.
The effort has caught fire online. One volunteer’s TikTok video racked up around 142,000 views, and a clip from volunteers Tim and Kelly leaving cards on eight vehicles in Polson drew a staggering 2.5 million views. In Kalispell, volunteers Shannon and Brittainy distributed 20 gift cards totaling $100 in a single outing. Across the group — which also includes Jesse, Beverly, Grace and Kate — the message spread far beyond Montana’s borders.
“What started as a small act of kindness has grown into a nationwide movement,” the organization said, according to reporting by Good News Network writer Andy Corbley. It is a model worth noting: instead of punishing bad behavior after the fact, a community chose to celebrate good behavior in the moment, turning a cup of coffee into both a reward and an invitation for others to do the same.
